Honoring fallen soldiers one decoration at a time

Canton, Ill. (WEEK) – A family in Canton is taking time to honor fallen soldiers from Illinois over the holiday season.

David Riney’s son – Sgt. Douglas Riney – was killed in Afghanistan in 2016. Riney says holidays are a hard time for families who have lost their loved ones. His family asked local high school students and friends to make decorations for a fallen soldier tree.

Riney says this is a great opportunity to honor the fallen heroes and bring comfort to their families.

“The thing that always is the biggest fear of any family of a fallen service member is that they’ll be forgotten,” said Riney. “So by putting their name on there, when people look at it they’ll read their name and say it out loud.”

A tree lighting ceremony will be next Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in the Brew-n-Cue beer garden on Elm Street. Riney says there will be a few short speeches and a performance by the Joe Stamm Band.
