Tree honoring fallen heroes goes up at CIRA

BLOOMINGTON (WEEK) – A special moment was observed for a third season as the Fallen Heroes Tree of Honor went up inside the Central Illinois Regional Airport tonight.

The tree was put up to commemorate more than 275 military men and women who have passed away from 40 states.

America’s Gold Star Families helped put it all together, with help from volunteers, including 8-year-old girls from the Brownie troop at Benjamin Elementary in Bloomington.

They put the hangers on the tree ornaments today.

“It’s a little hard to fully digest the weight of this topic but one of our Brownies is in fact a Gold Star kid,” said Sarah Johnson, leader of Brownie Troop 1256. “She lost her dad, and her mom actually lit the tree this evening and it was wonderful.”

The Tree of Honor will remain in place at CIRA through the holidays.
