Man still at large after Thursday gunfire with police

PEORIA (WEEK) – The search is ongoing for a man who exchanged gunfire with law enforcement Thursday.

23-year-old Tyshan Gayton was being served with a warrant on a parole violation near the intersection of Knoxville and Frye when the gunfire was exchanged.

The officer involved is a deputy with the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office who was assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Task Force, according to Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell.

The unnamed deputy is a five-year veteran with the sheriff’s office and has been on the task force since January 2019.

He was not injured and is currently on critical incident leave, per department policy.

After law enforcement prepared for a possible standoff with Gayton, it was discovered he had left the possible house they were watching.

Law enforcement considers Gayton armed and dangerous and at large somewhere in the Peoria area.

They advise the public to not approach him and to call 911 if he is seen.

A $2,500 reward is currently being offered for any information resulting in the arrest of Tyshan Gayton.
