Real life mom who inspired “The Blind Side” speaks at Salvation Army fundraiser

Leigh Anne Tuohy, the real life mom who inspired “The Blind Side” was in Central Illinois Saturday night.

She was the guest speaker at an event hosted by The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary in Peoria.

Tuohy, played by actress Sandra Bullock, adopted Michael Oher who would go on to be drafted by the Balitmore Ravens in 2009.

She said the movie is just one chapter in her life, since the film’s release Tuohy has remained active. She said the message she shares with audiences is one that resonated with the Salvation Army.

“We’re really passionate that you can open your home, open your heart to a kid that needs a forever home. None of the kids asked to be in that situation. that’s why I love everything that the salvation army does because it focuses so much on homelessness and hunger and some of the issues we had with Michael and that we deal day in and day out with kids that cross out path.” said Tuohy

25 News evening anchor Caitlin Knute was the emcee for the evening. Chief Meteorologist Chuck Collins helped conduct a live auction for the crowd.

The money raised will go toward fighting local hunger and homelessness.
