UPDATE: Illinois State Trooper killed in the line of duty

UPDATE (07:12 P.M.) — Illinois State Police SWAT Trooper Nicholas Hopkins has died, per a press release from the Illinois State Police.

He was 33 years old and a 10-year veteran of the state police.

UPDATE (10:50 A.M.) — According to an Illinois State Police release, the trooper was executing a search warrant in the 1400 block of North 42nd Street in East St. Louis when an exchange of gunfire took place at 5:26 a.m. Aug. 23.

The trooper received life-threatening injuries, according to the release. The 33-year-old trooper, and 10-year veteran of the ISP, was transported to a hospital.

The incident is an open and ongoing investigation with an active scene.

This story will be updated once more information becomes available from the ISP.

EAST ST. LOUIS (WEEK) — In a post on social media, the Illinois State Police confirm that a trooper was shot Friday morning.

The post says the trooper was shot while executing a search warrant.

Further information, including the trooper’s condition, have not yet been released.
