BLOOMINGTON (WEEK) – A scam going around Bloomington has police putting businesses on alert.
It’s called a “forced authorization scam,” where someone tries to check out in a store, but their card won’t work.
The scammer says something along the lines of, “this happens all the time – just let me call my bank.”
On the other line, the person tells the clerk to force the card to authorize the sale.
When it goes through, the business is on the hook for the money.
Bloomington police say one way to avoid getting scammed is to ask the person what their bank is and calling them yourself.
