BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL (WEEK) – Unit 5 in Bloomington-Normal is in need of school bus drivers.
That’s why they held a special event Tuesday night to give people a shot behind the wheel of a school bus. A representative with the bus driving company, First Student, said there is an industry-wide shortage of bus drivers, and Unit 5 needs drivers to service their 134 routes.
One bus driver we spoke to said he picked up this job after retiring from a long career in the dental field, and said said this is fulfilling.
“it’s a responsibility I take it very seriously. First and foremost I want to make sure the kids get to school safely and get home safely,” said Doug Christensen.
To apply to be a bus driver with Unit 5, you must be at least 21-years-old, with a clean driving record and background check.
First student will pay for your commercial drivers license (CDL) training.
Starting pay is $17 per hour, and there is a $1,000 signup bonus for qualifying applicants with experience.
