McLean County K9 officer survives drowning attempt, assists in arrest

SHIRLEY (WEEK) — A K9 Officer for the McLean County Sheriff’s Office is doing okay tonight (July 10), after a suspect tried to drown him around noon July 11.

Sheriff Jon Sandage said Stephen Sholty had two warrants out for his arrest when they were trying to apprehend him in Shirley.

Sheriff Sandage said while running from authorities, Sholty ran into a nearby creek. When the K9 followed, Sholty tried to push the dog under water. The K9 Officer survived and managed to bite the suspect so he could be arrested.

Sholty was arrested with no further incident, but Sheriff Sandage says he’s known to resist arrest.

Sholty is facing several charges, including resisting/obstructing/peace officer, false alarm to 911, and battery.
