Lightning strikes utility pole, shuts down I-39 near El Paso

Woodford County Communications Center said lightning struck a utility pole Wednesday night, shutting down North and Southbound lanes of I-39 near El Paso.

They said power lines fell across the interstate causing the shutdown around 8:50 p.m.

Police, fire, and Ameren crews are on scene trying to clear the pole and reopen the interstate.

Woodford County Communications said they don’t know of any injuries at this time.

Ameren Illinois’ outage map said 292 are without power in the El Paso area as of 11:00 p.m.
