An interstate bridge that saw another semi-truck accident over the weekend has been rated
in one category as “intolerable” for at least two years now.
Saturday, a semi-truck hit the Pinecrest drive overpass on I-74, taking off the roof of the cargo trailer in the process.
No one was hurt but the driver of the truck was cited for being too tall, too wide and failing to reduce speed in order to avoid an accident.
This same bridge was the scene of a similar but fatal accident April 9, last year.
25 news is Digging Deeper and we’ve found the Pinecrest overpass was rated as “intolerable” for under clearance in both 2017 and 2018.
IDOT rated that bridge as a high priority for correction.for at least two years in a row.
The superstructure was also rated as “poor” for two years as well.
IDOT and Illinois State Police are still investigating why a semi-truck hot that same overpass on Interstate 74 just before 6PM Saturday evening.
The call came in at 5:45PM of the truck tearing off the root of it’s cargo after striking the Pinecrest Drive overpass in East Peoria.
The highway was partially closed for over four hours as crews worked to clean and clear the scene. Traffic was backed up for several miles.
State Police say the driver has been cited for being over-height, over-width, off route permit and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
