Pekin man and his dog attacked by pit mix at Mineral Springs Park

A Pekin man and his dog are recovering after being attacked by a pit bull-blue heeler mix in Mineral Springs Park.

Tazewell County Animal Control said it happened Thursday, March 21. They said they are holding the pit mix in a ten day quarantine. We are told it happened around 7:30 in the evening when the pit mix got loose from its home, and ran at the man walking his dog.

The pit mix started attacking his dog, and when the man tried to separate them, the pit mix bit his hands. Animal Control said the man’s dog was seriously injured. The pit mix was up to date on its vaccines, but the owner was given two citations for the incident. There will be a viscous dog investigation.

Animal Control said the case will be sent to the state’s attorney, then to a judge who will decide if the pit mix will have to be euthanized.

Animal Control also said Pekin City ordinances allow dogs to be off a leash as long as they respond to the owner’s voice.
