Steve Roegge officially became East Peoria’s police chief when he was sworn in Friday.
Roegge is a 31-year vet of the Peoria Police Department, starting as a patrol officer in 1988 after graduating from Illinois State. The new chief is getting used to his new community.
“[I want to know] how can the police department and the community work together?” Roegge says, “and really find out what their wanting from the police department and how can we work with them to get that?”
Roegge wore many hats with PPD, including with the training unit and K9 unit. He was also a narcotics investigator and developed active shooter training programs.
Roegge takes over for the retired chief, Dick Ganschow, whose final day was Thursday.
