Pekin has a new City Manager, but he is quite familiar with the role.
Mark Rothert has been the Interim City Manager for the past three months.
Rothert said he is excited to help the city grow into a more vibrant community. But, he’s also ready to work through challenges every city faces like police and fire pension obligations.
“We’re going to be starting our budget process here coming up, so we gotta have those internal discussions with each department head as to how they will fund their operation next year – what services they’re going to be providing and discussions like that,” said Rothert.
Rothert said he would love to see more economic development in the Downtown and Riverfront districts.
He also hopes to see more investment in aging public infrastructure.
Rothert has over 17 years of experience in local government and economic development.
The 39-year-old received his bachelor’s degree in political science at Western Illinois University and has a master’s in public administration from the University of Kansas.
