This has been a violent summer, so far, for the Bloomington police department.
With 5 people killed over a 10-day period in June, they’re preparing for a large crowd at the fireworks display on Wednesday the fourth at Miller Park.
They’ve been checking intelligence sources, including email and social media, and will complement that with undercover and extra uniformed officers for the big event in an effort to ensure safety.
"These individuals are additional resources. So, that might mean, ‘Hey, if maybe you had a vacation scheduled, well then your vacation was denied’. So we can have adequate numbers both taking calls for service on that shift and in a condensed area like a Miller Park," Bloomington Public Information Officer Elias Mendiola said.
Police also encourage people to speak up if they see anything concerning.
