Local law enforcement officers honored at special awards banquet

Local law enforcement officers were honored at a special awards banquet in Peoria County.

It comes in the middle of Police Week, a bittersweet time as the police community remembers those lives lost in the line of duty. But, according to Sheriff Brian Asbell, it’s also a time to celebrate those members doing great things on the job.

That included Todd Campbell who was recognized as the Corrections Officer of the Year.

"I’m very excited and very blessed to be doing what I’m doing and I’ve been doing for a long time. And it’s been a challenge, but it’s all worth it in the end," Campbell explains.

JR Kester was given the other notable award of the night, recognized as the Deputy of the Year.

Kester is a K-9 Handler who says working with his 4-legged partner is one of the best parts of his job.

"He’s very loyal, and he loves me. And as soon as I say ‘go to work,’ he’s excited. And he’s got my back at all times," shares Kester

"I’m proud of them, they’re both well-deserving for everything they do, and that goes for our team out here," adds Sheriff Asbell.

The awards handed out Tuesday night were chosen by a committee made up of the officers’ peers.
