BREAKING: Two dead after house explosion in Rapatee

Update: Fulton County Emergency Management and the Fairview Fire Department confirm that two people were killed in a house explosion around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

First responders were called to Rt. 97 and North Street to find a home there leveled by an explosion.

Witness reports say the home is gone, the explosion scattering debris and downing power lines in the area.

The home was supplied by an external propane tank, and did not have a natural gas services line.

AMEREN crews are on scene and waiting for the all clear to begin restoring power to residents in the area.

The road will remain closed through at least Monday.

According to the Fulton County Emergency Management Facebook page emergency responders are on scene at a gas explosion in Rapatee. IL 97 in Rapatee will be close for some time. Residents are encouraged to seek alternate routes and avoid the area. The gas leak has been contained.

Knox County Sheriffs office reports Route 97 will be closed in that area through at least Monday.

Fulton County ESDA said that Fairview Fire Chief Hanlin has been in touch with AMEREN and they are working to get power restored.  A restore time is not known at this time.

We are told Chief Hanlin will have a a statement later today.
